Marsabit County Distributes Gala Goats to Drought-Hit Households Under Climate Resilience Plan
Marsabit County

Marsabit County has launched a targeted livestock restocking initiative to support pastoralist communities recovering from prolonged drought.

The county government, through its Department of Water, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, distributed 150 Gala goats to 50 vulnerable households in Dololo-Dokatu (Saku Sub-County) and Loglogo (Laisamis Sub-County).

These areas have faced severe livestock losses due to recurring droughts, threatening livelihoods and food security.

The exercise, implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, prioritizes climate-resilient solutions tailored to the region’s arid conditions.

Each beneficiary household received two female goats and one breeding buck (known as korbesa in the Borana dialect) to help rebuild herds sustainably.

The Gala breed was chosen for its ability to withstand drought, reproduce quickly, and thrive in Marsabit’s harsh environment.

County officials oversaw the distribution, with Chief Officer for Environment and Climate Change Abdullah Sheikh leading the exercise in Dololo-Dokatu, while Chief Officer for Natural Resources Pauline Marleni and Environment Director Janet Ahadho spearheaded efforts in Loglogo.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen pastoralist resilience by restoring livestock assets, improving household incomes, and mitigating future climate shocks.

By focusing on locally led adaptation, Marsabit County aims to empower communities most affected by climate change while promoting long-term food security and economic stability.

The program reflects a growing shift toward sustainable recovery models in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands, where climate variability continues to disrupt traditional livelihoods.

Future phases are expected to expand support to additional households facing similar challenges.
