Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has been honoured with the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the 2025 Governors Excellence Awards in Paris for his outstanding leadership in transforming healthcare in the county.
The international recognition celebrates a series of groundbreaking reforms spearheaded by Governor Jama’s administration, which have significantly improved access to quality healthcare services across the region.
Among the notable milestones is the modernisation of Balambala Level IV Hospital, making it the first rural facility in Kenya to integrate digital health tablets for improved patient care.
The county government has also embarked on upgrading 104 health facilities, ensuring that even the most remote dispensaries are equipped to provide specialised services.
In tackling human resource challenges, the administration has employed health workers across all cadres to strengthen service delivery.
Garissa Referral Hospital, the county’s main health facility, has undergone extensive renovations and expansions, now boasting modern surgical equipment and hosting specialised pediatric cardiology outreach camps.
The installation of advanced systems such as the Laparoscopic Tower and Endoscopy Unit has drastically reduced the need for costly patient referrals outside the county.
Governor Jama described the award as a tribute to the people of Garissa and the healthcare professionals driving these reforms.
“This recognition is not mine alone; it belongs to the resilient people of Garissa, our tireless healthcare heroes, and every partner who has stood with us along the way. To be celebrated on a global stage for impact made at home is the true power of people-centred leadership,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to modernising healthcare and expanding access, pledging that no resident will be left behind.
The accolade places Garissa on the global map as a county committed to equitable, innovative, and sustainable health solutions.
