The ASAL Humanitarian Network—Kenya, in partnership with the Garissa County Government, has convened a county-level stakeholder session to strengthen disaster preparedness through alert-based early warning systems.
The three-day forum, running from today until Friday, 22nd August 2025, brings together representatives from national and county governments as well as humanitarian partners.
The goal is to enhance coordination, identify gaps, and build resilience against recurring disasters in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
Key areas of focus include assessing the current Disaster Risk Management (DRM) landscape, exploring alert-based models for timely and anticipatory action, and reviewing financing mechanisms to sustain early warning systems.
Organisers say the dialogue is crucial in ensuring that communities vulnerable to drought, floods, and other climate-related shocks are better protected through proactive and well-funded disaster risk management approaches.
By creating a joint platform for collaboration, the session aims to move the region closer to a more coordinated and anticipatory disaster response system, reducing losses and safeguarding livelihoods.
