The Kenya Red Cross Society is responding to the urgent humanitarian needs of hundreds of families who have fled conflict in Baled Hawo, Somalia, and crossed into Mandera East, Kenya.
Since July 22, a total of 327 households have been received and sheltered in temporary camps established at Barawako and Duse Primary Schools.
Red Cross said the displaced families, many of whom fled with little to no belongings, are being provided with essential non-food items to support their immediate needs.
“We have distributed sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets, kitchen sets, jerrycans, buckets, and shelter materials to the affected families,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.
“Food assistance will follow shortly as part of the next phase of the emergency response.”
The humanitarian intervention is being carried out in close coordination with the national and county governments of Mandera, alongside the Mandera Ulamas, a collective of religious leaders providing critical community support.
The Kenya Red Cross has emphasized the importance of collaboration in responding to cross-border humanitarian emergencies and praised the swift mobilization of local partners in Mandera.
The situation remains fluid as more families are expected to seek refuge in the region amid ongoing insecurity in Somalia’s Gedo region. Humanitarian agencies are on high alert and continue to monitor the evolving needs of the displaced population.
