The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of 17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, one of the suspects wanted in connection with the desecration of Kenya’s national flag during a football match at Nyayo Stadium.

The incident occurred on September 20, 2025, during a CAF preliminary tie between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC, where two individuals were captured on camera stepping on the national flag.

The act sparked public outrage, with many Kenyans calling for swift action against those involved.

According to the DCI, Ibrahim was positively identified as one of the offenders and has since been taken into custody.

Efforts to apprehend the second suspect, who is believed to still be in the country, are ongoing.

The arrest has ignited a debate, with activist Boniface Mwangi cautioning against punitive measures given Yusuf’s age.

“Haidar Yusuf is a minor, and I hope he will be treated as such. The criminal justice system should be rehabilitative, not punitive, for a petty offender like him,” Mwangi said.

Authorities reminded the public that desecrating national symbols is a serious offence under Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, Cap 99.

The law states that any person who shows disrespect to the National Anthem, the flag, or other specified emblems and names commits a criminal offence punishable by law.

The DCI urged members of the public to support the manhunt by sharing information through the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The arrest is part of ongoing efforts to enforce respect for Kenya’s national symbols and safeguard their dignity as pillars of national unity.
