In Maralal, UNICEF has partnered with local leaders and organisations to roll out the Last Mile Connectivity in Schools initiative, a European Union-funded program aimed at transforming education by extending digital learning access to remote areas of Samburu.

The initiative focuses on connecting schools in hard-to-reach areas to reliable internet, building digital infrastructure, and ensuring that learners and teachers are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in the digital age.

It is designed to promote equitable access to ICT-enabled and inclusive education while strengthening child protection, online safety, and climate awareness.

The program also prioritises inclusive learning by creating opportunities for children with disabilities.

Through specialised interventions such as the use of Braille kits and teacher training, visually impaired learners will be supported to fully participate in digital education.

Partners involved are contributing in diverse ways, including expanding internet connectivity, establishing digital hubs and virtual labs, promoting mental health and online safety, and integrating climate-smart practices into school programs.

The effort brings together county authorities, national government agencies, and community organisations to ensure sustainability and broad impact.

With support from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission, the ICT Authority, and Samburu County Government, the initiative marks a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide and opening up new learning opportunities for children in marginalised communities.

It underscores the shared commitment to ensure that no child is left behind in the digital transformation of education.
