Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Program in Longarkau, Kacheliba Constituency, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to expand access to affordable and reliable electricity to all Kenyans.

The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the rural–urban development gap by ensuring every household has access to power, a critical enabler of economic transformation, education, and healthcare delivery.

The government is committed to ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind in the journey toward universal electricity access.

This project will light up villages, power schools and health facilities, and open up opportunities for small businesses in every corner of the country.

The Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Program, implemented in partnership with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and other energy agencies, seeks to extend electricity to households located within 600 meters of existing transformers.

The program has already connected hundreds of thousands of homes across the country, with West Pokot among the latest beneficiaries.

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin welcomed the launch, terming it a timely intervention that will accelerate socio-economic growth in the region.

In another meeting, Governor Kachapin hosted a delegation from the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), led by Eng. (CPA) Calistus Wasike, at his official residence in Kapenguria.

Discussions focused on ongoing and planned projects aimed at enhancing electricity transmission and connectivity across the county.

“The County Government of West Pokot is committed to supporting national energy initiatives that promote investment, industrial growth, and improved livelihoods for our people,” said Governor Kachapin.

“Reliable and affordable power is key to unlocking our county’s economic potential.”

He added that collaboration between KETRACO and the county administration will help fast-track electrification efforts, particularly in remote and underserved areas, ensuring that communities benefit from improved access to essential services and new opportunities for enterprise.

The launch of the Last Mile Program in West Pokot is part of a broader government strategy to scale up rural electrification across the North Rift region, where electricity access remains relatively low.

Officials say the project will not only improve living standards but also support education, healthcare, and value addition in agriculture, the backbone of the local economy.

With the rollout of this initiative, thousands of households in Kacheliba Constituency and neighbouring areas are expected to gain electricity connections in the coming months.
