The Ethiopia Joint Response Project is making transformative strides in restoring dignity, safety, and emotional well-being for children affected by conflict, displacement, and humanitarian crises.
Through the creation of dedicated Child-Friendly Spaces, the project is helping young survivors reclaim a sense of normalcy, confidence, and hope for the future.

During a recent visit to one of the facilities, Mr. Damalesh, Head of the Global Humanitarian Unit at Terre des Hommes Netherlands, described the impact as both visible and deeply moving.
“Watching children play freely, so deeply engaged that they didn’t even notice our presence, is one of the clearest signs of a true Child-Friendly Space,” he said.
“A place where children feel safe, supported, and able to simply be children. These spaces provide structure, protection, and healing, and here they are doing exactly what they are meant to do.”
According to an update by SND Africa, the Child-Friendly Spaces established under the Ethiopia Joint Response Project serve as vital sanctuaries where children can learn, play, and recover from distress.
They are designed to provide psychosocial support, structured activities, learning opportunities, and emotional guidance, elements that help children rebuild resilience after experiencing trauma.
Across affected regions, these spaces have become hubs of recovery and stability.
Children engage in play, social interaction, and creative activities that foster emotional healing while trained facilitators support them in overcoming fear, anxiety, and behavioural challenges triggered by conflict.

SND Africa, working in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands and other organisations under the Joint Response framework, continues to prioritise child protection and holistic support.
The program’s community-based approach ensures that families and caregivers are also engaged, strengthening the broader safety net around vulnerable children.
As humanitarian needs persist across Ethiopia, the Joint Response partners reaffirm their commitment to expanding protection services, promoting child well-being, and ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive.
