Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tasew, has unveiled ambitious plans for the completion of the new Bishoftu International Airport, projecting that the state-of-the-art facility will be operational within five years.

The announcement marks a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to bolster its aviation infrastructure, with international flight services expected to commence by 2030.

Tasew emphasized the transformative potential of the Bishoftu International Airport for Ethiopia’s aviation sector.

The new airport is poised to enhance the country’s connectivity, support economic growth, and solidify Ethiopian Airlines’ position as a leading carrier in Africa.

The Bishoftu International Airport, located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, is designed to alleviate pressure on the existing Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and accommodate the growing demand for air travel in the region.

The project is expected to feature modern facilities, increased capacity, and advanced infrastructure to handle both passenger and cargo operations.

Tasew’s announcement underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to expanding its global reach while fostering development within Ethiopia.

The airline, a key player in Africa’s aviation landscape, aims to leverage the new airport to strengthen its hub-and-spoke model, connecting Africa to the world.

Construction of the Bishoftu International Airport is already underway, with the government and Ethiopian Airlines working closely to ensure the project meets its 2030 target for launching international flights.

The development is anticipated to create jobs, boost tourism, and drive economic opportunities in the region.

As Ethiopia continues to invest in its aviation infrastructure, the Bishoftu International Airport is set to become a cornerstone of the country’s vision for a modern, connected, and prosperous future.
