The enchanting Lamu Island is once again buzzing with colour, music, and cultural pride as the 23rd edition of the Lamu Cultural Festival kicks off from November 20 to 22, 2025.

Each year, the festival draws thousands of residents, dignitaries, enthusiasts, and tourists eager to experience the rich tapestry of Swahili heritage, and this year is no different.

From thrilling dhow and donkey races to captivating traditional dances, Lamu Town has come alive with the unmatched vibrancy that has made the event a cultural icon.

But 2025 marks a new chapter for the festival.

The Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the County Government of Lamu, and Lamu Tech Hub, has unveiled the Student Technology Innovation Challenge, a first-of-its-kind addition designed to blend cultural celebration with technological creativity.

The initiative offers a platform for young innovators to showcase how digital literacy, coding skills, and problem-solving can be harnessed to address real-world challenges and reimagine tradition in exciting new ways.

From coding projects to technology-driven interpretations of Swahili culture, students are demonstrating the powerful intersection between heritage and innovation.

Organisers say the challenge is not only about celebrating youth creativity but also about opening doors to future opportunities in technology across frontier counties.

With each project presented, the message is clear: when tradition meets innovation, the possibilities for the next generation are boundless.

As Lamu celebrates its culture, the festival is also shining a spotlight on tomorrow’s changemakers, young minds shaping Kenya’s digital future while honouring the roots that define the region.
