The Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has taken a significant step toward advancing digital literacy and child protection in Lamu County.

Late last month, a team from FCDC visited Mahmoud Bin Fadhil Girls Primary & Junior School in Mkomani Ward, Lamu Central, the county’s largest girls’ school with an enrollment of over 1,052 learners, for a Child Protection Policy Development workshop that highlighted the transformative power of digital education.

Led by Abdullahi Maalim, FCDC’s education and governance sector lead, alongside Finance and Administration Manager Abdullahi Atosh, County Trainer Abdillah Feiswal, and Raspberry Pi Foundation Advancing Computing Skills Educators Jesse Buya and Ummi Abdu, the school’s head Ms. Saida Mohamed, warmly welcomed the team.

The visit showcased the school’s commitment to fostering digital skills among its students, with a standout moment occurring in the ICT room, where the girls confidently demonstrated their proficiency in a Scratch programming lesson.

Their presentation underscored the creativity and confidence that digital literacy can unlock, inspiring all in attendance.

The workshop, held at Mahmoud Bin Fadhil, was part of a broader initiative to develop a comprehensive Child Protection Policy for Lamu County while integrating digital education to empower young learners, particularly girls.

In an update by FCDC disclosed that the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s support has been instrumental in making this project a reality, equipping students with critical computing skills that open doors to future opportunities.

The dedication of educators Abdillah, Jesse, and Ummi has further ensured the program’s success on the ground, fostering a nurturing environment for skill-building.

The FCDC emphasized that the progress witnessed at Mahmoud Bin Fadhil extends beyond technology.

As digital literacy continues to grow in the region, the future looks bright for Lamu’s girls, who are poised to lead with confidence and innovation.
