The government has released KShs 294,494,400 to support 109,072 households across eight arid counties under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP), the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has announced.
According to NDMA, the funds will be available to beneficiaries’ accounts at Kenya Commercial Bank and Equity Bank agents and branches by Wednesday, 3rd September 2025.
The programme is part of the government’s broader Inua Jamii social protection initiative and is implemented under the Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP).
A county breakdown shows that Mandera received the highest allocation at KShs. 59.6 million for 22,102 households, followed by Marsabit at KShs. 55 million for 20,388 households.
Wajir was allocated KShs. 51.7 million for 19,162 households, while Turkana received KShs. 43.5 million for 16,142 households.
Other allocations include Garissa (KShs. 24.8 million), Isiolo (KShs. 17.8 million), Samburu (KShs. 21.9 million), and Tana River (KShs. 19.7 million).
Each beneficiary household receives a monthly stipend of KShs. 2,700 through the HSNP, which provides predictable cash transfers to vulnerable families in drought-prone regions.
NDMA has advised registered beneficiaries experiencing payment challenges to visit the nearest bank branch to update their details and access their stipends.
Speaking during the announcement, NDMA Chief Executive Officer, Lt Col (Rtd) Hared Adan, MBS, emphasized that the cash transfers are a vital cushion for households in arid and semi-arid lands, helping them cope with the impacts of drought and economic hardship.
The HSNP, which has been a flagship safety net for food-insecure households, continues to play a key role in strengthening resilience and ensuring no family is left behind during drought emergencies.
