Islamic Relief Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to building resilient livelihoods among pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya through targeted training on livestock breeding and management.

In Balambala, Garissa County, community members are already witnessing the positive impact of these capacity-building efforts.

During a recent feedback session, ten group chairpersons shared how the training has strengthened livestock health, improved productivity, and enhanced household income security.

The sessions focused on practical skills that empower pastoralists to take better care of their animals, including how to vaccinate livestock, identify common diseases early, and adopt improved breeding practices.

“We can now confidently identify diseases and take early action,” said one participant, noting that early detection has significantly reduced livestock losses.

Another group leader added, “Breeding knowledge has helped us increase livestock numbers and improve the quality of our herds.”

Islamic Relief Kenya emphasised that continuous community engagement is essential to ensure long-term sustainability and that feedback from pastoralists plays a crucial role in refining future interventions.

“We are deeply grateful to the communities for sharing their experiences and to our partners and supporters who make this work possible,” the organisation said in a statement.

The initiative is part of Islamic Relief’s broader strategy to strengthen resilience in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), where livestock remains a critical source of livelihood and a key driver of local economies.
