The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the County Government of Garissa have agreed to take joint action to improve the Kismayu Road corridor, following a high-level meeting chaired by Governor Nathif Jama.
The meeting, held in Garissa, brought together officials from KeNHA, the Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO), and the County Commissioner’s Office to deliberate on infrastructure challenges and solutions along the vital transport route.
Governor Nathif called on KeNHA to upgrade the section of Kismayu Road passing through Garissa town, emphasising the need to ease traffic flow, enhance safety, and improve the general urban environment.
He further urged the Authority to restore water pipelines and sewer systems that were disrupted during previous roadworks to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to residents.
“Better roads mean better lives, they open up business, improve service delivery, and make our towns more livable,” Governor Nathif said.
During the session, stakeholders resolved that GAWASCO engineers will prepare a comprehensive report with cost estimates detailing the damaged water and sewer sections for immediate joint action.
Governor Nathif underscored that the partnership between KeNHA and the County Government is central to achieving sustainable urban development.
He noted that coordinated infrastructure projects will help transform Garissa into a cleaner, safer, and more organised town.
The Kismayu Road corridor serves as a critical link for trade and transport in northeastern Kenya, connecting Garissa to border areas and neighbouring counties.
Its improvement is expected to boost economic activity, enhance mobility, and support long-term growth across the region.
