Kenya is hosting a high-level, five-day training program in Nairobi aimed at boosting regional efforts to combat terrorism financing.
Organized by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), the workshop officially opened at Villa Rosa Kempinski on August 5, 2025, bringing together security officials, financial intelligence units, law enforcement agencies, and regulatory experts from IMCTC member states.
The program is designed to strengthen the capacity of institutions and individuals in detecting and disrupting the financial networks that sustain terrorist organizations.
It emphasizes the need for enhanced cross-border collaboration, legal innovation, and the strategic use of financial intelligence systems to combat illicit flows of money across the region.
In his opening remarks, General Officer Commanding Central Command (CENTCOM) Maj Gen John Nkoimo highlighted the complexity of terrorism financing, which increasingly exploits vulnerabilities in conventional banking systems, mobile money platforms, and even the dark web.
Maj Gen Nkoimo called for a whole-of-government approach that integrates legal, technological, and diplomatic tools to increase national resilience and collective regional preparedness.
The training program builds on the momentum of a similar session held in April 2025, which equipped 22 Kenyan professionals with critical skills in counter-terror finance operations.
KDF explained that the current workshop aims to expand this impact across IMCTC’s member countries by sharing best practices, reinforcing regulatory compliance, and promoting real-time cooperation.
IMCTC Secretary-General Major General Mohammed bin Saeed Al‑Moghedi stressed the importance of aligning national and regional efforts to dismantle the sophisticated financial architecture behind terrorist networks.
Major General Mohammed also urged member states to enhance legal frameworks and institutional capacities to better respond to emerging threats.
Running through August 8, the workshop features a series of expert-led panels, simulation exercises, and inter-agency coordination sessions.
These are designed to boost operational readiness and improve mechanisms for detecting, reporting, and responding to terrorism financing threats.
By hosting this critical training initiative, Kenya reinforces its role as a strategic hub in regional counter-terrorism efforts and a proactive partner in global security.
