The government has unveiled a bold KSh 596 billion irrigation initiative aimed at countering the severe impacts of climate change in arid and semi-arid regions (ASALs).
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku made the announcement during a humanitarian mission to Moyale Constituency, Marsabit County, where relief support services were delivered to vulnerable families grappling with prolonged drought and food shortages.
Addressing residents, CS Ruku emphasized the urgent need for sustainable and innovative solutions to the climate crisis, which continues to devastate livelihoods in northern Kenya.
He noted that climate change realities have become more pronounced, demanding robust interventions to reinforce food security and build resilient communities.
Ruku explained that the irrigation plan aims to expand irrigation farming to at least one million acres over the next decade.
This large-scale agricultural investment will enhance national food production and improve economic opportunities through modern agricultural innovations and technology.
The relief operation in Moyale saw the delivery of critical food supplies and support services to households affected by drought, flash floods, and other climate-induced challenges.
CS Ruku reaffirmed the government’s commitment to comprehensive interventions that address both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term resilience-building in ASAL regions.
He was accompanied by a delegation of elected leaders, including Moyale MP Prof. Jaldesa Guyo, Marsabit Woman Representative Hon. Waqo Naomi, Garissa Woman Representative Hon. Amina Udgoon, North Horr MP Hon. Adhe Wario, and Mandera South MP Hon. Haro Abdul, alongside NGAO leadership and local community leaders.
