The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Slovak Embassy in Kenya to explore the opportunities and risks of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in humanitarian action.

The two institutions signed an agreement that will guide joint research into how emerging AI technologies can enhance humanitarian operations while ensuring that innovation remains safe, transparent, and aligned with humanitarian values.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the initiative aims to develop a responsible AI framework to guide the use of advanced technologies in emergency response, disaster preparedness, and community resilience.

AI is being increasingly integrated into humanitarian efforts worldwide, offering transformative potential in areas such as disaster forecasting, crisis mapping, logistics, and health interventions.

For instance, AI-powered tools can analyse satellite imagery to predict floods or droughts, optimise resource distribution, and improve early warning systems.

However, the use of AI also comes with ethical and operational challenges.

These include concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias, risks of misinformation, and the potential for technology misuse in sensitive contexts.

The Kenya Red Cross–Slovak Embassy collaboration seeks to address these gaps by promoting responsible and inclusive AI adoption that strengthens humanitarian outcomes without compromising fundamental principles such as neutrality, impartiality, and accountability.

Through this partnership, both institutions aim to position Kenya as a regional leader in ethical humanitarian innovation, where technology serves as a bridge between human compassion and scientific progress.
