Kenya emerged a standout performer at the IGAD Media Awards 2025 after Citizen TV’s Jamila Mohamed was honoured with the prestigious Gender Responsive Award for her exemplary journalism that champions gender equality across the region.

Held in Ethiopia, the vibrant and memorable ceremony brought together top media practitioners from the eight IGAD member states, celebrating impactful storytelling and the role of journalists in shaping public discourse.

Jamila’s award recognised her incisive reporting that highlights the lived realities, challenges, and triumphs of women and girls, as well as gender-related issues affecting communities across the IGAD region.

In addition to Jamila’s win, Kenya’s Bonface Baraza was feted in the Upcoming Media Personality category, marking another proud moment for the Kenyan delegation.

On an update on his official X platform , IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu praised journalists for their courage and commitment to elevating community voices.

“Tonight, as we mark the #IGADMediaAwards2025, we celebrate the storytellers who are shaping and boldly rewriting the future of the IGAD region,” he said.

“From Sudan to Uganda, Kenya to Ethiopia, Djibouti to South Sudan, Somalia to Eritrea, we honour not just journalism, but the women and men who use their craft to speak authentically, powerfully and fearlessly for the voiceless.”

Dr. Workneh also expressed gratitude to the Government of Ethiopia for hosting the ceremony.

“My heartfelt appreciation to the Government of Ethiopia, and to Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, for graciously hosting us and providing the support that made tonight’s event possible. And to all our partners, thank you for walking this journey with us,” he added.

This year’s awards reaffirmed the essential role of media in fostering accountability, promoting social justice, and amplifying underrepresented voices across the Horn of Africa.
