Farmers in Lamu County have received a major boost following the rollout of new livestock development interventions aimed at strengthening production, enhancing resilience, and increasing household incomes.
Speaking in Mpeketoni, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, announced that the government has supported farmers with 6,000 day-old chicks, modern beehives, and commissioned a solar-powered milk cooler for the Witu Livestock Cooperative Society.

The initiatives, implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, are expected to improve poultry productivity, promote climate-smart beekeeping, and reduce post-harvest losses in the dairy sector.
The solar milk cooler is set to help farmers preserve milk for longer periods, ensuring better quality and enabling them to fetch higher market prices.
PS Mueke said the interventions are part of government efforts to enhance livestock commercialisation, support value addition, and empower rural households economically.
“These programmes are designed to improve production, stabilise farmer incomes, and build resilience against climate challenges,” he said.

The event was attended by Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, Lamu County Woman Representative Hon. Muthoni Marubu, Principal Secretary for Investment Promotion Abubakar Hassan, and Lamu Senator Hon. Kamau Githuku, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting livestock farmers across the county.
Leaders hailed the support as timely, noting that poultry, apiculture, and dairy farming remain key livelihood pillars for many households in Lamu.
The new interventions are expected to improve food security, create jobs, and stimulate local economic growth.
