A transformative agricultural project spearheaded by Stella Mundi, an organization affiliated with the Catholic Church, is set to revolutionize the livestock sector in Tana River County with the introduction of large-scale lucerne farming.
Approved during a special county cabinet meeting chaired by Governor Major (Rtd.) Prof. Dhadho Gaddae Godhana, the initiative will commence this year, initially covering 3,600 hectares under irrigation, with plans to expand to 12,000 hectares.
Governor Godhana hailed the project as a game-changer for the county, emphasizing its potential to uplift livelihoods and bolster resilience.
“This project is not merely growing lucerne for livestock. It’s about growing opportunities, incomes, and resilience for our people,” he said, describing it as a high-impact, climate-smart, and community-focused model.
The approval followed a detailed presentation by Stella Mundi to the county cabinet, outlining the project’s vision and benefits.
Fr. Anthony Ndung’u, a representative of Stella Mundi, highlighted the organization’s successful track record, noting that a similar lucerne project spans 35,000 hectares in Tanzania, while a 350-hectare potato initiative thrives in Zimbabwe.
Mayor Mangeya, the group’s Managing Director, elaborated on the ambitious scope of the Tana River project, stating,
“From Tana River, we will be able to export 75,000 tons of lucerne per year, making it a top-line revenue source for the county. The local livestock will also greatly benefit. Food security will be enhanced for the people, and many jobs will be created as this project is labour-intensive. Lucerne is the king of fodder and will revolutionize the sector.”
The initiative promises significant economic and social impacts, including job creation due to its labor-intensive nature and enhanced food security through improved livestock productivity.
The export potential of 75,000 tons of lucerne annually positions Tana River as a key player in the regional fodder market, while locally, the project is expected to strengthen the livestock sector by providing high-quality fodder.
Governor Godhana pledged his administration’s full support for the initiative but stressed the importance of direct benefits to the local community.
“The investment must have a tangible impact on the people of Tana River County,” he cautioned, underscoring the need for inclusive growth.
As Tana River County prepares to launch this pioneering project, the collaboration with Stella Mundi marks a significant step toward sustainable development, economic empowerment, and a resilient livestock sector.
