The County Government of Mandera has launched a comprehensive livestock vaccination campaign aimed at protecting pastoralist livelihoods and boosting animal health across the county.
The 10-day exercise, which runs from November 5 to 14, 2025, targets both small and large ruminants for vaccination against Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Anthrax, and Blackquarter, diseases that have long posed significant threats to livestock and pastoral economies in northern Kenya.
The campaign was officially launched at the Mandera County Offices by Hon. Bare Shabure, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Livestock, and Mr. Mohamed Adan Issack, County Chief Officer for Livestock.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Shabure emphasized the county’s commitment to safeguarding the health of livestock, which remain the primary source of livelihood for thousands of households in Mandera.
The vaccination drive is funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) through the Swiss Embassy in Kenya and implemented under the Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) Livestock Sector Strengthening II (LSS II) Program.
The initiative aims to enhance animal health systems and improve community resilience across arid and semi-arid regions.
Mr. Mohamed Adan Issack lauded the collaboration between county authorities and development partners, noting that strong partnerships are essential to addressing the persistent challenges of livestock diseases and climate shocks in the region.
The campaign will cover all six sub-counties in Mandera, with vaccination teams deployed to reach remote pastoral areas.
County veterinary officers and community animal health workers will lead the effort, ensuring both accessibility and efficiency.
The initiative has been praised as a key step in Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif’s broader strategy to strengthen the livestock sector and build resilience among pastoral communities affected by drought, insecurity, and disease outbreaks.
The Mandera County Government urged all livestock owners to cooperate with vaccination teams and ensure their animals are immunised.
As the campaign progresses, Mandera joins other frontier counties in implementing sustainable solutions that protect both livestock and livelihoods.
