Mandera County has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) as it marked the 2025 International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) at the Disability Resource and Information Centre in Mandera Town.

The event, led by the Department of Social Services and Special Programmes, brought together government officials, disability groups and development partners to highlight ongoing efforts to strengthen inclusion, expand social protection and cushion vulnerable households amid prolonged drought.

Speaking at the ceremony, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Social Development, Mohamed Ali Omar, outlined major achievements, including the recent assent to the Mandera County Social Protection Act.

The law provides a structured framework for enhancing the welfare of vulnerable populations, particularly PWDs, ensuring they have better access to essential services and support.

The CECM also announced the proposed Health for Dignity Initiative, an upcoming pilot programme that aims to provide health insurance coverage to indigent persons with disabilities in Mandera East.

He noted that the initiative, once successful, will pave the way for broader implementation across the county.

As part of ongoing drought mitigation efforts, the county showcased a sample food allocation for vulnerable PWDs in Kamor and Township wards, ahead of an expanded distribution targeting more households in Mandera East.

The event also featured on-site registration under the Social Health Authority (SHA), supported by trained Community Health Promoters to help streamline access to healthcare services.

The county government expressed appreciation to development partners, including Action Against Hunger (ACF), Save the Children, the World Food Programme (WFP), and RACIDA, for their continued support.

ACF provided visibility materials, facilitated community dialogue sessions, and supported disability inclusion awareness, while other partners contributed to strengthening social protection systems.

Mandera County officials reiterated that despite the challenges posed by drought, the administration remains resolute in ensuring that no person with a disability is left behind.
