Mandera County is poised for a major infrastructure and development push following high-level consultations between President William Ruto and leaders from the northern Kenya region at State House.

According to the President, the meeting brought together Mandera’s top leadership, including Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, Senator Ali Ibrahim Roba, and Members of Parliament from all six constituencies, to chart a path for transformative programmes in the expansive county.

The discussions focused on expanding access to dependable electricity, improving road networks, strengthening water supply systems, and delivering affordable housing to support the county’s growing population.

Plans are also underway to construct modern markets and provide student hostels for each technical college across the six constituencies, initiatives expected to boost local commerce and education.

President Ruto emphasised the government’s broader vision for northern Kenya, describing the region as the country’s next frontier for large-scale food production through irrigation.

He noted that national and county leaders had agreed to begin identifying suitable land for commercial agriculture, a move aimed at enhancing food security, creating jobs, and unlocking the economic potential of arid and semi-arid areas.

The planned investments signal increased national attention on historically underserved northern counties, with leaders expressing optimism that improved infrastructure and agricultural expansion will accelerate socio-economic transformation in Mandera and the wider region.

If implemented, the projects could significantly improve livelihoods, strengthen regional connectivity, and position Mandera as a key contributor to Kenya’s future food production and economic growth.
