Garissa County is set to benefit from a new phase of the Denmark–Kenya Strategic Partnership (2026–2030), following high-level consultations between Governor Nathif Jama and officials from the Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi.

The partnership will focus on climate action, governance reforms, and sustainable solutions for refugee-hosting counties such as Garissa, which continues to shoulder the responsibility of accommodating large refugee populations.

The discussions placed strong emphasis on localising international cooperation by giving county governments a leading role in designing and implementing solutions.

This shift is expected to ensure that development initiatives are responsive to the realities on the ground and aligned with community priorities.

Among the areas identified for collaboration is climate financing, with projects such as Mathenge briquette production highlighted as innovative examples of building resilience while addressing environmental challenges.

The partnership will also work to strengthen public-private collaborations, unlock new investments, and improve coordination across different levels of government for greater impact.

For Garissa, the agreement represents not only new opportunities in climate-smart development but also a chance to advance governance reforms, reduce resource wastage, and improve livelihoods for both host communities and displaced populations.

By embedding local leadership at the core, the partnership marks a significant step toward long-term, sustainable development in the region.
