The Kenya Pastoralist Parliament Group (PPG) Executive Committee today joined forces with the Drylands Learning and Capacity Building Initiative (DLCI) and the National Livestock Development and Promotion Service (NLDPS) in a strategic visioning session aimed at defining the future of Kenya’s livestock sector.
The high-level meeting focused on co-creating a shared vision to guide policy coherence, sector reforms, investment prioritization, and stakeholder engagement within NLDPS.
Participants emphasized the critical role of livestock in Kenya’s economy, particularly in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), where pastoralism sustains millions of livelihoods.
Speaking during the session, Hon. Epuyo Nanok Peter Lochakapong’, CBS, MP, reaffirmed the PPG’s commitment to working collaboratively with government agencies and development partners to ensure that pastoralist interests are represented in national policies and programs.
They echoed the need for an inclusive, evidence-based approach to livestock policy that reflects the realities of pastoral communities.
According to DLCI representatives, the partnership marks a significant milestone in strengthening Kenya’s livestock systems through improved coordination between policymakers, technical experts, and pastoralist stakeholders.
The NLDPS, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, will use insights from the session to refine its long-term strategy for livestock development, focusing on resilience, productivity, and equitable market access.
This collaborative effort underscores Kenya’s growing recognition of the livestock sector as a cornerstone of national development and a vital pathway toward economic inclusion and climate adaptation in dryland regions.
