Onion farming is emerging as one of the most profitable ventures in Mandera this season, creating new opportunities for farmers and value chain actors to increase incomes and improve food security.

The Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA) is spearheading efforts to ensure that the benefits of this growing sector are inclusive and sustainable.

By actively involving women, youth, and other vulnerable groups across the onion value chain, RACIDA is paving the way for shared prosperity and resilience within farming communities.

According to RACIDA, this inclusive approach is being driven by access to quality seeds and climate-smart production training, affordable irrigation solutions, and stronger linkages with traders, processors, and exporters.

These measures are designed to lower barriers to participation while boosting productivity and competitiveness in the market.

Mr. Omar Bulle, a Livelihood Specialist at RACIDA, emphasized that building inclusive partnerships in the onion value chain has the potential to deliver equitable benefits, enhance resilience, and promote long-term growth.

With Mandera’s market demand for onions steadily increasing, the initiative is positioning farming households to take full advantage of the crop’s profitability while contributing to broader food security goals.
