The Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA), through the Building Opportunities for Resilience in the Horn of Africa (BORESHA-NABAD) programme, has announced partial scholarships for youth in Mandera County to pursue short Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET/VTC) courses.

The scholarships, covering tuition and examination fees, aim to equip young people with market-driven skills that open up income-generating opportunities and strengthen resilience in one of Kenya’s most vulnerable regions.

Courses will run between three and six months, with priority given to fields such as masonry, plumbing, agriculture, welding, ICT, beauty, renewable energy, construction, and other growth sectors.

RACIDA noted that the programme is designed to support unemployed youth who have no formal training but wish to pursue technical skills that can lead to gainful employment or self-employment.

By linking training with market demand, the scholarships are expected to build the economic capabilities of youth while reducing reliance on unsustainable livelihoods.

“Community resilience begins with empowered youth who can secure dignified work and contribute to local economies,” RACIDA emphasized in its call for applications.

The scholarships are open to Kenyan citizens aged 18 to 35 years who are residents of Mandera County.

Applicants must have admission to a recognized TVET institution, preferably within the county, and be able to cover part of their accommodation, meals, and transport costs.

Women and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants are required to submit identification documents, proof of education, an institutional fee structure, and a letter from a local chief or religious leader demonstrating financial need.

The deadline for applications is 16 September 2025.

Mandera County faces high youth unemployment rates, limited economic opportunities, and recurrent droughts that strain pastoralist livelihoods.

By investing in skills training, RACIDA and its partners aim to create alternative livelihood pathways, reduce poverty, and enhance social stability in the region.

The scholarships are part of wider efforts under the BORESHA-NABAD programme to promote peace and resilience across the Horn of Africa through economic empowerment and inclusive development.
