The County Government of Lamu, through the Department of Veterinary Services, has launched a series of public participation meetings across various wards in Lamu East to gather community input on the proposed County Animal Welfare Bill, the first of its kind in the county.
The proposed Bill seeks to promote the humane treatment, health, and overall well-being of animals across Lamu.
Once enacted, it will provide a strong legal framework to ensure animals are properly handled, adequately fed, treated when sick, and protected from cruelty, neglect, or exploitation.
According to the Department of Veterinary Services, the Animal Welfare Bill is also designed to strengthen livestock management practices, improve disease control, and safeguard the economic and social value that animals bring to local communities.
The county has emphasised that the Bill will align with national legislation and global best practices, positioning Lamu as a leader in humane livestock management and sustainable animal care.
The ongoing public participation forums have drawn in livestock owners, farmers, traders, and other stakeholders, offering a platform for residents to share their views and recommendations to make the Bill more inclusive and responsive to community needs.
Participants expressed appreciation for the county’s proactive approach, saying it demonstrates a growing recognition of animal welfare as a key component of both economic development and public health.
The County Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that animal welfare remains central to sustainable livestock development, environmental protection, and the health of residents in Lamu.
Once finalised, the Lamu County Animal Welfare Bill will be presented to the County Assembly for debate and possible enactment.
