The Turkana community of Kenya and the Daasanach community of Ethiopia have taken a crucial step toward peace and cooperation with the launch of talks aimed at developing a Lake Turkana Resource Sharing Agreement.

The discussions, convened by PACIDA Kenya in Lowarengak Town, brought together Beach Management Units (BMUs) from Lokitonyela, Lowarengak, Kanamkuny, and Todonyang villages, alongside peace stakeholders.

Recent violent incidents linked to recurrent cross-border fisheries conflicts, which have claimed several lives prompted the initiative.

According to PACIDA, the initial forum served as a preparatory step to establish a framework for dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence between the two border communities.

The agreement under development will provide mechanisms for equitable resource sharing, particularly around fisheries, and help prevent future clashes.

The effort is part of the Triple Nexus Project, supported by Christian Aid and implemented by PACIDA in collaboration with partners such as CIFA Kenya and CIFA Ethiopia.

Organizers say the talks are intended to strengthen cross-border relations, reduce tensions, and build trust between communities that depend on the shared waters of Lake Turkana for their livelihoods.

The process marks a turning point in addressing the long-standing rivalry, with stakeholders optimistic that structured agreements will replace cycles of violence with cooperation, ensuring stability and sustainable use of resources.
