The world is mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amollo Odinga, a towering figure in the nation’s political history whose influence extended far beyond Kenya’s borders.
From New Delhi to Addis Ababa, global and regional leaders have paid glowing tribute to a man remembered as a democrat, freedom fighter, and unifying statesman.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Raila as “a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”
In a heartfelt condolence message, Modi recalled his personal bond with the late leader, dating back to his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said, noting Raila’s admiration for Ayurveda and traditional medicine, which he credited for improving his daughter’s health.
Modi praised Raila’s efforts in strengthening India–Kenya relations, saying his friendship with India was grounded in mutual respect and a shared vision for development and cooperation.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” he said.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who shared a complex yet defining relationship with Raila Odinga, offered one of the most emotional tributes.
In a moving statement, Kenyatta reflected on their political journey, from fierce opponents to partners in national unity through the historic 2018 Handshake.
“To me, Raila was more than a political colleague; he was a defining part of my own journey,” Kenyatta said.
“At some point, we became political opponents, and often, the weight of that competition felt immense. But in later years, we forged a different bond, one of respect, shared patriotism, and a common desire to see a united Kenya.”
He described Raila as a man of conviction and vision who “made you sharpen your own ideas” and whose belief in justice and reconciliation reshaped Kenya’s political landscape.
“I have lost a friend and a brother,” Kenyatta said.
“We have lost a father to the nation, a steadfast champion for the people, and a true son of Kenya.”
From the regional front, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), hailed Raila as “one of Africa’s most iconic sons.”
“An unwavering Pan-Africanist, he dedicated his life to democracy, justice, and unity,” Workneh said.
“His lifelong struggle for freedom and equality inspired generations across Kenya and beyond, reminding us that leadership is not about power, but about service and sacrifice.”
Workneh added that IGAD stands in solidarity with the people and Government of Kenya, noting that Raila’s legacy “will forever echo in the democratic foundations he helped build and in the enduring hope he instilled across our continent.”
As Kenya and the world mourn, tributes continue to pour in for a man whose political life spanned over four decades, marked by courage, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to justice.
