Tana River County has received a major boost in its urban development agenda following the formal handover of the Hola Municipality Physical and Land Use Development Plan by UN-Habitat.
The plan was presented to H.E. Major (Rtd) Dhadho Godhana, Governor of Tana River County, marking a significant step toward promoting orderly, sustainable, and well-coordinated growth within the fast-expanding municipality.

The comprehensive plan provides a spatial blueprint that translates county-wide planning policies into practical, site-specific land use strategies.
It outlines where and how development should occur, guiding zoning, infrastructure investment, environmental conservation, housing, public spaces, and economic activity within Hola.
Governor Godhana welcomed the plan, noting that it will help the county address unplanned settlements, promote efficient land use, and enhance service delivery.

He emphasised that structured urban planning is essential for attracting investment and ensuring that development benefits local communities in the long term.
The preparation of the Hola plan was supported by development partners, including UN-Habitat and the European Union through the Go Blue Programme.
The programme focuses on strengthening coastal urban planning, economic growth, and resilience across Kenya’s coastal counties.
UN-Habitat officials underscored the importance of aligning local planning processes with global sustainable urban development standards, adding that the plan will help Hola manage growth in a way that is inclusive, climate-resilient, and environmentally responsible.
