As the world prepares to mark the International Day of the Girl (IDG) 2025, UNICEF Kenya and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) brought together leaders, partners, and youth advocates in Nairobi for an emotional and inspiring call to action to end child marriage.

The event featured a special screening of the acclaimed film NAWI: Dear Future Me.

This powerful story follows a young girl’s courageous journey as she resists child marriage and pursues her education.

The film embodies the determination, hope, and resilience of millions of girls across the world striving to claim their right to learn and thrive.

The gathering drew participation from government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, and advocates working to advance girls’ rights and opportunities in Kenya and beyond.

Despite progress, child marriage remains a major challenge in Kenya, where 3.9 million girls have been married before the age of 18, according to UNICEF.

The practice robs girls of their education, health, and potential, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality.

Through the screening and dialogue sessions, participants reaffirmed their collective commitment to ending child marriage and ensuring every girl has the freedom to shape her own future.

The event forms part of broader nationwide efforts leading up to International Day of the Girl 2025, which celebrates the power of girls and calls for greater investment in their education, safety, and empowerment.

With continued partnership and advocacy, UNICEF and its allies aim to turn the message of #NAWI: Dear Future Me into reality, a future where every girl can learn, lead, and live free from child marriage.

International Day of the Girl (IDG) 2025 will be on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The official theme, established by girl-led organisations, is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis".

This day serves to celebrate girls' achievements, amplify their voices, and advocate for their rights and opportunities, especially in the face of challenges and crises.
