The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has intensified humanitarian efforts in Chesongoch, Marakwet East, and surrounding areas following the deadly landslide that claimed 26 lives, including 14 students.
Working under treacherous conditions, Red Cross volunteers continue to navigate flooded rivers, collapsed bridges, and rugged terrain to deliver life-saving aid and psychosocial support to stranded families.
The organisation confirmed that teams remain on the ground, providing relief supplies and counselling to survivors still reeling from the tragedy.

“Access is tough, but our volunteers continue to reach affected families, crossing rivers and rough terrain to deliver hope and help,” KRCS said in a statement.
The disaster struck amid ongoing heavy rains that have ravaged parts of the Rift Valley, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing hundreds of residents.
At least three bridges were destroyed in the landslide, cutting off key access routes and further complicating rescue and relief operations.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Bitok, who visited the affected areas, confirmed that 28 primary and secondary schools have been directly affected by the disaster and ongoing floods.
He expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that the government has mobilized all necessary resources to ensure national examinations continue uninterrupted.
“As government we have mobilised all resources necessary to ensure that affected candidates can continue their examinations without interruption,” said Bitok.
“We have made adequate arrangements to ensure that no candidate is disadvantaged because of weather conditions or the recent disaster.”
Helicopters, all-terrain vehicles, and logistics teams have been deployed to distribute and retrieve examination materials from hard-to-reach schools.
The Ministry of Education is also working with the Interior Ministry, state agencies, and the county government to evacuate affected families and set up alternative exam centres.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the Kenya Red Cross has appealed for public support, emphasising that the humanitarian needs remain immense.
The government and humanitarian agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, as forecasts predict more rainfall in the region in the coming days.
