A major education infrastructure project underway in Eldas Constituency, Wajir County, is expected to significantly improve access to quality secondary education and help bridge long-standing educational disparities in Northern Kenya.

The establishment of Mahadey Senior School marks an important milestone in the government's efforts to expand learning opportunities in historically underserved regions while supporting the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo, the project is designed to address growing demand for secondary education and provide a conducive learning environment for students transitioning from Junior Secondary School (JSS).

The new institution is being developed as a fully-fledged senior school and will feature six modern classrooms and an administration block, creating much-needed space for learners in the area.

To ensure sustainable operations, the school will be powered by solar energy, providing a reliable and environmentally friendly source of electricity. The investment is expected to enhance learning by supporting lighting, digital learning tools, and other essential school operations in a region where access to reliable power has often been a challenge.

Education stakeholders say the establishment of the school will play a critical role in supporting Grade 9 learners transitioning to senior secondary education under the Competency-Based Education system.

The project is also expected to reduce the distance students travel in search of secondary education, thereby improving school enrolment, retention, and completion rates.

Beyond academic facilities, the project incorporates critical water and sanitation infrastructure.

A shallow well is being installed to improve water security and ensure that students and staff have access to clean water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene purposes.

The water project is expected to enhance the overall learning environment while contributing to improved health outcomes within the school community.

Officials note that access to quality education remains one of the most effective tools for addressing poverty, promoting social mobility, and unlocking opportunities for young people in marginalised regions.

The development of Mahadey Senior School, therefore, represents more than the construction of new buildings; it is part of a broader effort to expand educational access and create pathways for future economic and social development.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is providing coordination support to facilitate implementation of the project through inter-agency collaboration and local oversight.

The department says its involvement is helping ensure the project is delivered efficiently while creating a secure and supportive environment for both the school and the surrounding community.

The investment comes at a time when Northern Kenya is experiencing increased government focus on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development as part of efforts to promote inclusive growth and reduce historical inequalities.

Once completed, Mahadey Senior School is expected to serve hundreds of learners from Eldas and neighbouring areas, providing access to quality education, modern facilities, and opportunities that will help shape the next generation of leaders and professionals in Wajir County.

Education leaders have welcomed the project as a transformative investment that will strengthen the region's education sector and contribute to long-term socio-economic development through improved access to learning.
