The Booji Yarey Community Farm in Labasigale is celebrating a new chapter in its agricultural journey after the official handover of a climate-resilient farming project, funded under the World Bank-supported Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLLoCA) programme.

The project, implemented by the County Government of Garissa, is designed to restore degraded environments, boost food production, and provide sustainable livelihoods for residents of the arid region.

Key features include a drilled and fully equipped borehole, a solar-powered water system, an elevated water tower with storage tank, and a pipeline network to irrigate farms.

Additional facilities such as VIP latrines, perimeter fencing, seeds and seedlings, and 20 modern beehives have also been provided, alongside farmer training to improve yields.

Speaking during the handover, Labasigale MCA Hon. Mohamed Sheikh hailed the collaborative effort as “a shining example of what targeted investments in climate resilience can achieve for our people.”

“This project will not only secure water for our farmers but also diversify incomes through beekeeping, boost food production, and strengthen our fight against the effects of climate change,” he said.

Local farmers expressed joy and relief, saying the development ended years of uncertainty caused by water shortages and poor harvests.

The initiative is part of Governor Nathif Jama’s broader climate resilience and food security agenda, aimed at ensuring communities in arid and semi-arid lands have the skills, tools, and infrastructure to thrive despite changing weather patterns.

Hon. Sheikh urged the Booji Yarey community to take full ownership of the facility, protect it, and use it wisely so that it remains productive for generations to come.

The handover ceremony was attended by Liboi MCA Hon. Alinoor, technical teams from the Directorate of Climate Change & Water Services, and dozens of residents who celebrated the milestone.
