Isiolo communities are building financial resilience through insurance education, health cover for 1,400 households and protection for seven community water points.
The Climate Risk WASH Financing initiative helps residents map water point risks, understand insurance cover and document damage when water supplies are disrupted.
Households are learning about Hospicash eligibility, claims procedures and how cash benefits can support daily expenses during a family member’s recovery.
Communities in Isiolo are strengthening their ability to manage climate and health shocks through an initiative combining insurance education, health cover for 1,400 households and protection for seven community water points.
According to Britam Foundation, the Climate Risk WASH Financing initiative is helping residents understand financial protection and develop practical skills to respond when disruptions threaten water access and household livelihoods.
The initiative brings together Britam Foundation, Oxfam Kenya, Britam Connect, Davis & Shirtliff, Merti Integrated Development Programme and the County Government of Isiolo.
Community members are learning to identify and map risks affecting the water points they manage. They are also being guided on understanding their insurance cover and documenting damage when shocks disrupt water supply.
These efforts aim to equip communities with the knowledge needed to manage risks and navigate insurance processes when damage occurs.
Alongside water point protection, households are being introduced to Hospicash, including who is covered, when a hospital stay qualifies for a cash benefit and how to submit a claim.
The sessions also explain how the cash benefit can help meet daily expenses while a family member recovers. Understanding eligibility and claims procedures is intended to help households make use of the support available under their cover.
The partners are pairing this education with health insurance for 1,400 households, while extending protection to seven community water points.
The approach recognises the pressures that climate and health shocks can place on families. Disrupted water supplies can limit access to an essential service, while illness and hospitalisation can strain household finances.
By combining practical knowledge with financial protection, the initiative seeks to strengthen communities’ capacity to respond to these challenges and reduce their impact on livelihoods.
Britam Foundation said the collaborative efforts are helping Isiolo communities build the knowledge and financial resilience needed to manage shocks that threaten both household wellbeing and access to water.
