The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) marked a major milestone of 60 years of humanitarian service by honouring exceptional volunteers whose dedication continues to transform lives across the country.
The anniversary celebration and the 2025 Volunteer Awards ceremony were held at the Boma Hotel in Nairobi, bringing together partners, humanitarian leaders, and volunteers from across Kenya.
Speaking during the event, Marie Dubeau, the Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation in Nairobi, paid tribute to the unwavering spirit of KRCS volunteers, noting that their work embodies the core values of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
“On this World Volunteers Day, I join the Kenya Red Cross in celebrating the true champions of our Fundamental Principles. Their dedication and courage reflect the very spirit of our Movement, unwavering service to humanity,” she said.
The ceremony highlighted six decades of lifesaving impact, encompassing emergency response, disaster preparedness, community health outreach, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
KRCS leaders emphasised that none of this would be possible without the thousands of volunteers who serve on the frontlines every day.
“Nearly 2 million people in Northern Kenya are hungry due to drought. Families in Western Kenya are displaced by rising lakes. In Marakwet, loved ones are still missing after the landslides, and our volunteers are still out there, bringing hope and closure. This is what our volunteers do,” said KRCS Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idris.
Among the standout recognitions of the day was the awarding of the Garissa Branch as the County Branch of the Year, celebrating its excellence in humanitarian response and community service.
Humanitarian volunteer Abdinoor Ole Hussein congratulated the branch leadership and teams, saluting their coordination, commitment, and consistent service to communities in need.
The event served not only as a celebration of past achievements but also as a renewed call for solidarity, volunteerism, and humanitarian action in the face of growing climate-related emergencies and emerging crises countrywide.
